Engine Diagnostics in Ozark, AL
The first sign of engine trouble is often the illuminated Check Engine light on your dashboard. Is yours lit up? Don’t panic…let’s briefly break down what the Check Engine light means.
Your engine and drivetrain are dependent on a chain of sensors and switches that all monitor and govern various engine and drivability functions, including:
- Fuel metering
- Spark timing
- Transmission shift points
- Spark advance
When any of these sensors is sending information to the engine’s central control computer that’s outside of norms, the computer stores a trouble code and lights up the Check Engine light. It could be something as simple and easy to fix as a loose gas cap that is preventing the fuel system from achieving a full vacuum, or it could indicate something more serious and hard to track down.
Obviously, the words “Check Engine” are pretty vague and don’t tell you much about what’s actually wrong.
For a technician, though, all that’s necessary is to hook up a code reader to the car’s diagnostic connector. He can then access the trouble code information, which will quickly point him in the right direction to find out what’s actually triggering that code.
Engine diagnostics have been around since the early 80s, when the earliest engine control computers featured a diagnostic connector for technicians. Every generation of engine controls since then has become more reliable and better in terms of power, emissions, safety and fuel economy.
If your Check Engine light is lit, don’t put it off – it’s not going to just get better on its own. Give us a call and set up an appointment for engine diagnostics at Road Mart Tire in Ozark, AL. We’ll be happy to get that Check Engine light taken care of for you!
