Too often, it seems like a car battery doesn’t last through its entire warranty phase. With the right care and maintenance, though, that doesn’t have to be the case.
Why Should You Check Your Battery?
For the same reason, you have anything inspected or checked, really – the peace of mind that comes from knowing that all’s well, much like with a health checkup. On the other hand, having your battery checked at regular intervals can tip you off to impending problems.
How Often Should You Check Your Car Battery?
The battery should be checked at least a couple of times a year for voltage, amperage, and reserve cranking power. Along with these checks, the battery should be inspected for corrosion around the posts and battery clamps. This fluffy-white substance can build up to a point where it prevents the battery from receiving or delivering a charge. Cleaning the posts with a wire brush and baking soda solution, then using a special grease (or even Vaseline) on the posts can prevent it from returning. While you’re under the hood, it’s also best to go ahead and check the serpentine belt for tension and condition and test the alternator for charging capacity and output.
Why Is RoadMart Tire The Best Place to Have Your Battery Tested?
There are two methods for testing a car battery – electronic testing with a multimeter and load testing to simulate what happens when you turn the key and engage the starter. At RoadMart Tire, we use both testing methods to ensure a good picture of the battery’s condition. A healthy battery, with the engine running, should be putting out 13.7 to 14.7 volts. With the engine off, a fully charged battery should measure 12.6 volts or more. If the battery voltage drops to 9.6 volts or below during the load test, it’s bad and should be replaced soon.
At RoadMart Tire, we carry a wide range of batteries from top brands, for practically any vehicle. Nothing’s worse than being stuck in a parking lot someplace with a dead battery. If you’ve got suspicions about yours, make an appointment with us at RoadMart Tire and let’s check it!
